Governor Martin O'Malley of Maryland is urging state and county planners to prepare for an estimated 1.1 million new residents in the next two decades. With the expected influx of residents and the addition of jobs from Base Realignment and Closure, O'Malley argues for implementing "smart growth" strategies around the state's mass transit stations. He points to the need for long-term planning and investment in infrastructure improvements. O'Malley cites examples such as the Intercounty Connector and the development potential near Metro stations in Prince George's County. However, plans for housing near the Shady Grove Metro station in Montgomery County face opposition from residents. O'Malley also discusses efforts to reduce violent crime in Maryland and highlights partnerships between the state and counties.
Our Thoughts
This is great news! As a Maryland Resident, to see the growth in our communities and the future economic impacts for local business. My question is the future development projects will it favor more a renter market or home buyer’s market? What does it look like more apartments, condos, townhomes, single-family or duplex are on the horizon? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
