Backyard Office is the perfect solution for privacy and working in peace. The latest trend is converting a turf shed or storage shed into a working space. The office shed I'll be discussing is a 12' x 8' studio shed that can be built from scratch or even converted from an existing shed.
Existing Storage Shed
Most shed conversion starts from prefabricated orders from a local home goods store. However, those sheds still lack all the comfort elements, for example, insulation to maximize heating and cooling. I was inspired by the world of E-commerce, the online business that can be managed from one computer. This is a rising "work from home" business model. As well, post-pandemic lifestyle working from home is the new "normal." So I started to think of If I had a shed or was to Build a backyard office studio, what would it look like?!
The Backyard Office Shed 12' x 8'
So let dive into this excellent design backyard office shed 12' x 8', approximately 98 SF shed that can be divided into two working zones. Zone 1 consists of an office desk, and Zone 2 is for entertainment and a seating area for your guests and future clients. As you approach, the outdoor shed is Floor Ceiling, Glass Door Frame supplied by Marvin windows. A design choice having the panels with no mullion patterns, the two glass panels will allow more than enough light. I didn't add any openings on the other walls because it is already a small space, and having many window openings can fluctuate the heating and cooling. I researched sustainable, efficient, affordable wall insulation. I believe Hemp Insulation is the solution for this project. HEMP Insulation can help reduce the humidity and condensation, limiting the growth of mold and drafts. Check with the manufacturer and local code to find the minimum R-Value and wall thickness to achieve your desired goal. In the case of heating and cooling, it is pretty common to install Mini-Wall Splits. I believe this is an excellent solution to achieving a ductless system. However, I intentionally did not have too many items on the walls, so I opted for the Durastar Ceiling Cassette system.
During preplanning and design development, you must consider these Ceiling Cassette units because it requires ceiling clearance and an exit sloped drainage pipe. Other than that, I believe it has a great finished look. It is sleek because it is flush to the ceiling and does not protrude into the space. Another factor to consider with backyard office sheds is soundproofing the noise and improving acoustic performance within the interior space. Having a soundproof paneling system is optimal for creating a quiet area. As a design element, the Arktura Wall Paneling system brings the shed a contemporary look. I like this system because Soft Sound Tiles have five sizes allowing various configurations. You can have fun creating your customized layout. Since this backyard office shed is more on the narrow side, there is not much space for large pieces of furniture.
Creating two different seating areas allows multiple people to enjoy the room. I selected the DSW Dining Chair of the main desk chair, granted this chair is labeled as a dining chair set. I love these chairs, and they are pretty comfortable. For Zone 2, the seating area, I selected Fathom Wood Lounge Chair Natural by Modway. I truly love how the curved wood is an art form in creating this chair and is stylish. These chairs were in the lobby of my college architecture department. I remember thinking, one day, I have to order my own. These Chairs sit low to the floor, so a simple coffee table such as the canton round Acacia coffee table is a great addition. You can add other art décors, such as art portraits and flat-screen TVs, to your desires and comfort. As for the finished floor, I suggest angled wood panel flooring. The 45 degrees flooring can soften the boundary within the small space, giving the illusion of a more expansive space.
Exterior Finish
The interior color theme is red, grey, and black from the Arktura Wall Paneling system. I carried that same theme with the exteriors. Red Metal panel siding and grey veneer stone. I genuinely love stonework; it's truly an art form. Finishing with a black metal roof.

Overall, I believe this contemporary design is straightforward, Using typical wood framing, HEMP Insulation, and a colorful interior design. Transform your ordinary shed or build from scratch. You, too, can have your personalized creative studio. Some standard programs for these small studio space is a dedicated fitness area, the writer's room, or the painter/artist.
