Designing for Outdoor Dining with Industrial Modern Style

Introduction

I recently brought land and it is reasonable small lot 50 feet by 120 feet. The house footprint will take about 60% of buildable area. The remaining is split between the front and backyard. So to make the home feel more spacious on such small lot. I plan on taking advantage of the outdoor space by having an outdoor backyard dining area. I tailored the the design style toward industrial modern. This style is considered to be sleek and minimalist look with and focus on functionality and practically, when it comes to materials selection the style and texture are often raw and weathered elements for example exposed brick, concrete, and metal. When it comes to color scheme the typical colors are usually neutral and matted with shade of gray, black, white, and brown. I have manage to incorporate these elements into beautiful backyard dining area great for gathering with guest and enjoying a meal together. Main reason why I love industrial style because of it simplicity and clean lines. You can always break a rule by adding an accent color or unique shape. In next section I’ve put together a series of decor and furniture items for selection when putting this space together. I hope you are able to and visualize this space coming together. Design Considerations

Pergola Freestanding Aluminum

By Peaceful Patios

When working with a small backyard having a structure can help define the space. This particular pergola is aluminum in black finish giving a modern look when most pergolas are typically made from wood. One key feature is has motorized louvered privacy screens. Controlled by a button for ease and functionality. Providing protection during the light rains and it also equipped with a gutter system for a more controlled environment. It very versatile that it has an option for selection of frameless sliding glass door.  This pergola will provide shade and shelter for the outdoor dining with your guests.

Modular Outdoor Kitchen

By Mont Alpi

As we mentioned before the backyard is a small space so we want to limit foot traffic circulation to and from the main house. So I believe having a this  modular stainless steel BBQ grill island with beverage center can keep your guest outside. Having food grilled near by makes the functionally of the backyard now serving two purposes 1. The kitchen 2. Dining for eating. Here are some great fact about this particular unit it has 6 burner gas grill supporting 115,000 BTU. The finishes is 304 Marine Grade black stainless steel and white granite countertops along with cabinet and storage space. This main reason I would prefer this unit is because it comes preassemble and easy hookup. Making it less labor intuitive and transform the backyard much more quicker.

Dining Table with Fire Pit

By Patio Pelican

When this dining table is lit, the flames dancing as center of attention. Set the ambiance and atmosphere for relaxing night. Once people set eyes on the pergola the second thing they will be captivated by is the dining table. The fire is sustained by natural gas or propane.  Seating capacity of 6 people. The dining table table base has a heavy wood base frame with stone tabletop finish making it excellent Choice for longer usage and durability.

Placemats and Dining Essentials

Setting the table is a detail most people tend to overlook, once the space has been developed I focus on smaller details such as the placemats and the silverware cups and plate, when designing any space everything should be intentional so it  carried out in the small and big details. There is more freedom in the color selection because these piece can be consider accent so don’t be afraid to go with a pop of color! Maybe a splash of red it’s your world have fun, For this ensemble I am going with black matte finishes of the plates, bowls, and placemats. the placemats comes in unique oval shape minor disruption to the clean simple lines of the surround structures and the industrial style.

Dining Chairs and Cusion Seats

Dining Chairs By Plywood

Cushion Seats By Grandin Road

When it comes to dining chairs, think about comfort and durability.  I prefer to have arm with the chairs when it comes to outdoor settings. I discover the EDGE Dining Arm Chair comes in multiples of colors, I decided color selection called Slate Grey because our dining tabletop has a gray stone texture finish. Giving a nice matching theme set. For these chimes comes fully assembled it also durable to harsh weather conditions. So these will be a great addition for the long haul. Another way to add color is by adding seat cushions. I recommend the Grandin Road Seat Cushions set because the design and color are in neutral tone which is in alignment of industrial modern style, I would pair the chairs with color selection called Flax these are stain and fade resistant.

Private Fence and faux plants

Once the dining area is completed setup we should consider the surrounding area. The pergola I selected does come with motorized privacy screens however it does not provide any privacy in the surrounding area of the backyard. These privacy fences are a great additions around the foot traffic circulations. I love the designs patterns for it adds some flair to scenery clean lines and simplicity. To help ground the prices fence, it is good to pair with some faux plants. Faux plants are more dependable for year round greenery. These faux plants are artificial hanging ferns for outdoor use and UV resistant. Add a few of these to the privacy fences still help blend the fences into the surround greenery.

Sculpture and Lighting

Metal Sculpture By Frontgate

Industrial modern is raw and exposed to natures elements. Brining art is classy and refreshing for different focus points. The art piece I selected is called “Divine” outdoor  sculpture. It a lovely centerpiece of abstract forms and modern materials. The Divine Steel sculpture is handcraft by Artisan House. Standing around 6’- 1/2” tall. I believed having this in the backyard will be for ice breaker conversations to discuss the beauty and craft. It quite unique for the metal is being expressed fluidity and light. Almost as if the metals are dancing. Another item to pair with the sculpture in the backyard is having a couple of waterproof LED round moon balls. Emitting a soft glow that are remote controllable. Also considered as solar outdoor post lamp that can be operated in different color temperatures. The moon shape lights adds a distinctive and polished touch to the backyard.

Outdoor Heating

By Bromic

The last piece of selections is the bromic Tungsten Eletric Heater. These units can be easily added to the aluminum pergola we talked about in the beginning. When the fire pit at the dining table is not in use you can turn on these heater to keep the outdoor dining area comfty. Unlike other Electrical heaters the Bromic Tungsten emits a soft glow as it heats up the space. Allowing your guest to remain comfortable and outside for longer period of time when the temperature begins to drop.

Conclusion

In conclusion I believe I created a beautiful modern industrial space that Transfoms a small backyard into a private getaway. The guest will be entertain by astechits and comforted by the warmth of the fire pit and outdoor heaters. Gathering around the table create a unique family bond for its a place we gather to distress and express our emotions and uplift and encourage each other. Having good food and conversations are memories we should cherish every time. These architectural design elements is at foundation of these future memories.
